Just like others have said, this drive definitely runs hot within the enclosure. Knowing this ahead of time, I had the temp monitor running on it since hooking it up. I have transferred about 100 GB to it, starting with a small 8 GB transfer to see how she fared. Sure enough, jumped up to 45 deg C very quickly. I didn't want to let it get any hotter than that, and preferred much cooler.
Temp fix: Taped a small 12v fan salvaged from another electronic item on the back vent blowing in. At the end of a 90 GB transfer, temp was sitting at 36 deg C (about 96 deg F). That is acceptable for now.
I have not opened the enclosure yet, but I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to wire the fan into the base so when the hard drive is on, the fan is on. Not a real sweet option, but workable.
Other option, open the enclosure (there's videos on YouTube), take your 3TB as internal or for a SATA dock, keep the base as a USB 3.0 SATA connector.
Overall, speeds have been acceptable for my storage needs. I knew it ran hot before buying it from other reviews, so taking precautions I didn't get burned on the purchase like others have and at the current time, it is a fair deal for 3TB of space. It appears to be cheaper than any internal 3TB drive here on Amazon right now except you get a free USB 3.0 SATA connector to boot.

Backing up multiple large media files, 1-4 gigs each, so I have bought 4 of these over time, as I've expanded my files and needed more space to back things up. I like them. Encryption is an option but not requirement, to password protect your files. Several other programs are included, all of which, I chose not to install... just not a big fan of them. I wanted the device for the device not to test out other programs. It will install a floating tool bar... I don't really care for it, but it's easy to "quit" and continue accessing the device via my computer.

I love this HD for its fast performance, high quality metal styling, and dual FireWire 800 ports. I've purchased a few others but this one tops the rest. It has built-in hardware encryption which is something I really needed. What amazes me is even though this is a MAC formatted drive which I bought for my 3.4GHz iMac i7 running OS X Lion, if you install Paragon HFS+ driver (about $15), a Windows PC can read and write to the drive as if it were in NTFS, AND the Western Digital hardware encryption dialog that requires you to unlock the drive also pops up on my Windows 7 PC, just as it does on my Mac, which is exactly what I needed... a dual-environment security-enabled HD that runs flawlessly whether on Mac or PC. If you re-format this drive to Windows NTFS however, you will lose the ability to use the hardware-level encryption that is built-in. I use this HD to run a virtual machine of my PC that I did away with when I purchased my Mac. The virtual PC image that resides on this drive runs faster than my old PC ever did and this HD serves out the data over FW800 and there are no lags whatsoever... Very happy with my purchase!

It's a great product. I have it for one month now. It's a very nice product and it's what I expect. I have seen no problem with it so far. I don't want to just repeat all good things that have already been mentioned in other reviews but I'de like to add one more point: If you've decided to buy this product I would strongly recommend the *red* color. Because it's more visible and can not get kicked as easy as black one. Keep in mind that it will live at next door to your computer for a long time and the original connecting cable is not so long.

This hard drive looks decent, like the pictures. It is a bit heavy, which is to be expected from a rugged hard drive. The first one I received only showed up about half of the time when plugged into a USB port. I thought that it was a driver problem, but I tried it on 3 different PCs after installing the driver, and it showed up more and more infrequently. Finally after a month it stopped showing up at all, which was just beyond the amazon return period, unfortunately. I was able to receive an RMA number from the company's website, and I mailed the defective unit to Hong Kong (which cost about $12). About 2 weeks later I received a new (or refurbished?) drive, which seems to work well after the first couple of weeks. I was impressed that the company replaced the defective product with a reasonable effort on my part.

I got the Airport Extreme in and then discovered the Apple Time machine on the Mac Pro. Doing more research lead me to this device, the Apple Time Capsule. I will admit that Apple's naming conventions get lost on me a bit. I decided to return the Airport Extreme as I couldn't use it the way I wanted and paid the extra money for the Time Capsule.
As most other reviews here will state, it is very simple to install. In minutes I had a 2.4 and 5.0 ghz networks up and running and using Time Machine I was doing a full backup on the Mac Pro. If you have any Mac's at all, I cannot see the sense of NOT buying the Time Capsule compared to the Airport Extreme.

This is my first impression of the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex and what i can say is that I love it. Having 1TB of external space really helps me. I have a whole host of files that i need to get off my laptop to leave space to install programs. Running out of space was always a problem for me. Now problem solved.
I compared this drive with the other drives that i saw available on Amazon and i found this one was the cheapest and had everything the others had. The software that comes with the drive allows you to backup all of files with the click of a button. I found this really helpful. I just clicked and left it to backup all my files (basically anything that wasn't directly related to windows).
All in all, I've got to say that this was a really good buy. I'd encourage anyone to do the same.
P.S. There's also software that check to see if your drive is functioning properly which allowed me to check if it was damaged during shipping. :D cool. Will be back with more if i find anything else interesting about the drive or if anything goes wrong. Peace.

I've had this WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive for 6 months now and am very pleased with it. This is second WD External Hard Drive I've had and I'm using them both as back up drives for my desktop and as secondary storage drives. The older hard drive is an earlier version of the My Book. I do a lot of photography and the digital images keep mounting up! The drive seems to be fast [I've no way of measuring how it operates] and is virtually silent in operation. I'm using a USB 2 connection to my computer. Other reviewers have criticized the original included software but I can't comment on this as I've always just deleted the software included with external hard drives - I prefer to set up my own back-up schedule. I've deducted a star because there is no power switch so either the unit is on all the time or you have to unplug it to switch it off. Other than that, I've no criticism of the unit. Well recommended.

I exercised this little drive pretty hard and it performed. Here is what I did:
I used my Apple iMac to test the drive. This computer only offers USB 2.0, so that is what I used. I used this drive as a Time Machine backup device, with data encryption. Unless you are an Apple user, that won't mean much to you. But this is relevant to any customer: Using the drive for the first time kept it writing, without interruption, for 48 hours straight. Apple's software wrote data to every available spot on the disk drive. When you have 2 terabytes of spots to write, it takes about two days. I kept the drive connected for another 12 hours too. During that time, the Time Machine software wrote a modest amount of data to the drive, once per hour.
No problems! I also tested the physical cable connection of this drive. This is a particular area of concern to me, because I know of several portable disk drives that have faulty connectors, which renders the entire drive useless. One of these faulty drives was a Western Digital 1 terabyte drive. However, this particular drive was great! I used the USB 3.0 cable that ships with the drive. With my finger, I tapped the cable end, near the disk drive. I (gently) picked up the drive and dropped it about half an inch. I did all this while the disk drive was busy writing data. No problem! These little drives can also accept a micro USB 2.0 cable, and I repeated these tests using just such a cable. Again, no problem.
There are not very many 2 terabyte drives of this size on the market. It is therefore not surprising that you will pay a bit of a premium for this one, where the premium is measured in dollars per megabyte. But this premium is not unreasonable. I must say, I am really impressed by this drive. So many bytes, yet so small!
I have several other portable drives that I can compare to this one. For appearance and apparent quality, I like the Toshibas best. Second place goes to Buffalo Technology. The Western Digital drives look just a bit too plasticky to my eyes. I was concerned that all that plastic might cause the drive to overheat and fail. But I did run it for two and a half days, and it never got more than slightly warm. Again, I am really impressed.

I bought this to put all my video, animation, and media projects on. All those files take up a lot of disk space in no time flat and it's definitely got plenty of space. On plugging it in and powering up, it integrated seamlessly with my MacBook Pro and I had it using Time Machine within 5 mins.
This is not a portable drive, where you just plug into an available USB port and you're good to go. It has an external power adapter that must be plugged into a power strip or wall outlet. So, if you're considering taking it with you, just keep that in mind. And speaking of portability, it is fairly small and will easily slip into a laptop bag, if the need arrises.
The operation is quiet and quick. I can plug in, upload or download, and I'm good to go. You can't beat the price for the amount of disk space you get, 3TB total. If you're looking for a substantial amount of disk space and you're budget conscious, then this drive is for you.
